South Walton has beautiful beaches, top chefs and enough retail to suffice any shopping addict. What it doesn't have, until now, is a movie theater.
Of course, when Grand Boulevard decided to include a movie theater to its map, it had to be nothing less than grand.
"It's an incomparable theater in an incomparable location," said Terrell Mayton, director of marketing for Carmike Cinemas. "There's nothing like it in Florida."
Making their Florida debut, the new theater will feature a "BigD" theater and Ovation Dining Club as part of its upscale and state-of-the-art movie experience.
The Carmike Boulevard 10, a 40,000 square-foot entertainment complex, houses 10 theaters that feature high back luxury chairs, large, wall-to-wall screens, as well as DLP digital projection and digital sound.
Want to go? Carmike Boulevard 10, located at 465 Grand Blvd., will have its grand opening Thursday, March 28 with a midnight showing of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation." The regular movie schedule will begin Friday, March 29 at 1 p.m.
Taking the movie watching experience a bit further, the "BigD" auditorium has a wall-to-wall screen measuring 60 feet wide and nearly three stories tall. The theater provides the latest in surround sound and digital projection for both 2D and 3D films.
"It's HD on steroids," Mayton said with laugh. "This is only the seventeenth BigD theater in the country."
The BigD, Mayton said, is the best place to see an action-packed film, concert, sporting event, motivational speaker or church service.
The theater will have a grand opening with midnight showing of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" Thursday, March 28. On Friday, March 29, the full movie schedule will begin at 1 p.m.
If you're planning a dinner and a movie date night, head to Carmike Boulevard 10 for the Ovation Dining Club, an upscale hybrid of a restaurant. Enjoy your movie — and your dinner too — in leather seating and swing around tables. The Ovation menu is not your average movie food fare. Dishes range from cheese plates to seared bay scallops with grilled polenta to soy-glazed chicken breast wrapped in a tomato herb tortilla.
"The Ovation Dining Club has gotten rave reviews," Mayton said of a Chattanooga, Tenn. location. "The restaurant has an elegant menu with select wines and incredible desserts."
The Carmike Boulevard 10 will fit right in at Grand Boulevard, Mayton said.
"It's a great destination and shopping location," he said. "We're excited to be a part of the vibrant and poignant community."
No matter how fancy the movie theater experience gets, Carmike is still close to its "home town theater" roots, Mayton said.
"We make sure everyone is greeted and welcomed — making sure all the elements come together," he said. "It's something you really have to experience. First thing everyone says when they walk in is 'Wow.'"
Imagine immersing oneself in the latest Hollywood blockbuster while being served succulent dishes that range from a simple cheese plate of gruyere and brie with apple, dried and fresh fruit, compote, and toasted baguette; to seared bay scallops with grilled polenta, topped with micro greens and garnished with basil oil and red pepper drizzle; to a soy-glazed chicken breast wrapped in a tomato herb tortilla, with a sweet Asian sesame slaw, peppers, onion, garlic and carrots. That’s about to happen when the curtain rises at South Walton’s first cinema the Carmike Boulevard 10.
