After the couple sold a successful online business in 2007, they were set to retire — even though they were only in their early 40s. Representing their "home states" they named the company Blue Sun, after "The Bluegrass State" and "The Sunshine State" where they split their time.
"We left our new investments with the management companies at the time only to find that we were constantly disappointed with the cleanliness, maintenance, and revenue," Phillips said.
Through word of mouth, Blue Sun Properties started to work with other owners and eventually grew from an inventory of three rental properties to 61.
"What started as a husband and wife owned and operated company has grown to include one customer care specialist, two reservations specialist, and one dedicated maintenance person," Phillips said. "We are a team of six dedicated professionals with years of experience in property management and customer service. We don't just want customer satisfaction, we want customer enthusiasm."

With their background in web development, Jeff and Lucinda Phillips have brought that expertise to Blue Sun Properties by creating mobile apps for guests and owners.
"Owners will have access to an owners’ portal where they can view reservations, make personal reservations, view owners’ statements and even submit maintenance requests," Phillips said.
When it comes to renting out properties, Blue Sun makes sure that the price is right.
"If you are looking for just a warm body in your property, then we probably are not the right management company for you," Phillips said. "No deep discounts. Our company is about forging long lasting relationships with our guests and owners, not the dollar."
