Santa Rosa Beach resident Sandy Weiner has always been a runner. She’s also a giver.

She runs four to six miles a day, six days a week, and in October of last year, Weiner saw something on Pinterest about Charity Miles, a way for runners to help charities while they run.

That sounded like a great idea to Weiner. She was running any way, so why not help a charity while she did it.

Charity Miles is a free app that empowers you to earn money for charities while walking, running or biking every day. Just choose a charity and hit the streets. As you walk, run or bike, the app will track your distance and you'll earn money for your charity at the rate of 10 cents per mile for bikers; 25 cents per mile for walkers and runners; all up to $1,000,000 courtesy of corporate sponsors.

Weiner said a runner downloads the app onto their phone and then just makes sure to take the phone with them every time they run, walk, or bike.

The runner gets to choose from several charities to benefit.

As you walk, run or bike with Charity Miles, you also help them attract more sponsors to increase their sponsorship pool.

Weiner has run for different beneficiaries, but said she will be focusing on the Wounded Warriors for the remainder of the year.

"My dad is retired military, so, this one speaks to me, but different people have different passions and some might want to run for autism or cancer," she said.

Since Weiner runs so much, she has been raising $4 to $6 per week for charity for the past year. She estimates that has probably accumulated to around $350. And this was accomplished without donating time or money to events.

"As a working parent who doesn't have a lot of time to volunteer, this is a good way to raise money for charity and exercise at the same time," she said. "I have always been a runner and worked full time. It's hard to put in hours to volunteer. This is my way of giving back and it allows me to combine two passions."
