A Niceville area was arrested Monday and charged with felony burglary and petit theft of the Goodwill store in Santa Rosa Beach, according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

On Dec. 29, Dewayne Elliot Shelton of Cat Mar Road placed items valued at more than $200 in his truck and tried to flee, but got stuck in the mud due to recent rains, according to his arrest report.

When he took the donated items out of his truck to free it from being stuck, a store employee noticed his activity and confronted Shelton. Shelton fled on foot, leaving the truck, which was registered to him but had a stolen tag, the report said.

The 35-year-old was traced through his truck’s VIN number, the report said. The Goodwill employee identified Shelton’s driver’s license photo.
He was arrested in Okaloosa County and found to have two prior theft convictions, his report said.

He is awaiting extradition back to Walton County where additional charges are pending for trespassing at Taking Care of Business Inc, located at 74 Moll Drive, Santa Rosa Beach.

The business is a third party contractor for U-haul and after fleeing Goodwill, Shelton went to the business, broke into one of the trucks but did not take or damage anything, according to a press release from WCSO.

This is the original report.
