Beginning in January, Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance and Walton County’s Coastal Branch Library will jointly host “From Shelves to Shores.”

Once a month, CBA will host an activity for children at the Coastal Branch Library in South Walton. The activities will include growing Spartina Alterniflora in salt marsh nurseries and learning about the bay through hands-on experiences. The library will also provide books and resources that children can read to enhance their understanding of the bay, their environment, and community service. Call Shirles at the library for more information at 850-267-2809.

The project coincides with the library’s Winter Reading Challenge. Young patrons who visit the library will be encouraged to read books throughout the winter months, and the library will keep track of their progress through a grass chart. A permanent display will highlight the program and CBA from the end of January through May. Stop by the Coastal Branch library to check out the display and our salt marsh nurseries. And don’t forget to get your children involved in this fun project.

Monthly activities will occur at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on the following dates:

• Jan. 23: Introduction to Salt Marshes

• Feb. 20: Recycling Oysters

• March 20: Rain Barrel Fund

• April 24: Observation Tanks

• May 22: Project Celebration
