I’m reminiscent of the song Carol Burnett sang at the end of her television show: “Seems we just get started and before you know it, comes the time we have to say so long.”

Although, we’re not saying “so long” just yet, the Walton County Snowbirds are certainly starting to think about their departure. Activities and events that we anticipated are now behind us and soon the final general meeting of the season will have taken place. Board members and leaders are zealously scheduling dates and locations for next year’s ventures. Looking ahead seems to be the mode, and in the short term that means going back home. Brrr!

Activities

As activities begin winding down, Tom Mahar reports that the Creative Writers Workshop completed more than 40 original stories and essays this season, plus as many opening paragraphs, all written in response to prompts. Bob Hendrickson of Illinois recently earned a Best of the Workshop award for his story “And a Good Time was Had by All.” Michiganders Jean Weber and Kathy Lyles scored top honors for penning captivating opening paragraphs. Writers, keep up the good work expanding on those creative ideas until our return next year.

The Walton County Snowbird Thursday Golf League excitedly reports that Jim McNair recorded his first ever hole-in-one at the Golf Garden’s Hole No. 5. Although Jim did not see it actually go into the cup, he felt pretty confident about that shot. Jim’s wife, Lorraine, witnessed the ball drop and enthusiastically congratulated Jim along with the others in the foursome. With the availability of a camera phone the epic event was documented. For his accomplishment, Jim will receive $20 from the Walton County Snowbird Golf League, a free round of golf from the Golf Garden along with a pin flag and certificate. Cheers and compliments were bestowed on Jim from his fellow league and committee members along with the bar bill. Well done, Jim!

The first Snowbird Cup, pitting golfers from the Destin Snowbird Club and the Walton County Snowbird Club competing for some very serious bragging rights, was won by the Walton County Snowbirds. Hats off to the triumphant champions who won the Cup 14 ˝ to 3 ˝. There were 72 golfers for this sold out affair, 36 representing each club on a perfect “Chamber of Commerce” kind of day at the Bluewater Bay Golf Course. Although the competition was fierce the best team received some well-earned swagger, at least for a year!

Eunice and Bob Collins have reported the winners of the Euchre players who attended the Feb. 6 game. They are first place winners, Shelva Johnson and Frank Baehman along with second place winners, Betty Vandervecht and Don Gungett. For the Feb. 13 game, first place went to Mac Sheahan and Pat Towns with Grace Kulas and C.O. Ulrich taking second place honors. There is a first and second place winner in the men and the women categories, so these snowbirds fought hard to beat their opponents. They play at the Embassy Suites on Thursday evenings until March 6.

General Meeting

Our last general meeting for this season will be Feb. 26, at Village Baptist Church, 101 Matthew Blvd. in Destin. Please note the location of this meeting, as it is the first time that we have held a general meeting there.

The entertainment for this meeting will be our own Walton County Snowbird Singers. If you enjoyed their concert Feb. 22, then you will definitely enjoy their encore performance at the general meeting.

This will also be your last opportunity to become a lucky door prize winner for this year. We certainly want to applaud the efforts of Jeannette Diggins and all of her hard working committee who canvassed the area merchants for an ample amount of prizes. Those businesses are always happy to hear that the snowbirds appreciate their generosity. The newly elected officers of the Walton County Snowbird Club will be introduced and the retiring ones will be acknowledged. We are all just that much closer to saying “so long” for this season.
