New author Jeff Morris will sign copies of his first book "Won't Come Home" at two South Walton locations in March.

Morris resides in Colorado but owns land here and has relatives who live in this area, so he visits often. Set on the Gulf Coast, his book is a novel based on situations he has experienced throughout his life.

"It's the story of a guy who spends a long time running from responsibility and deals with drug and alcohol issues," he said.

He said that he wrote from experience, but it is not a memoir, adding that he has attended thousands of open AA-type meetings and continues to be involved in the process.

"The struggles of the characters in the book were not exactly like mine, but similar. I needed to tell this story for myself," he said.

Morris's first book signing in South Walton will take place at Sundog Books in Seaside on March 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. The second will be March 29 at Coastal Branch Library.

At the library, the first hour (10 to 11 a.m.) will consist of a workshop on funding and self publishing for first-time authors based on the author's experiences. The second hour (11 a.m. - noon) will be the book signing with a meet the author reception. For more information call the library at 267-2809.

"I'm having to learn to be outgoing," said Morris. "If you're going to make a living as an author, you have to promote yourself."
