Walton Snowbirds for Feb. 19, 2009

With February quickly drawing to a close we wonder where the time has gone. If you are renting to the middle of March and might want to stay till the end, talk to the person you rent from, as many establishments are offering the last two weeks of March for the same winter rate, as March- Break bookings are down some 35%.

Don Gehrke and his storage crew will be available at Affordable Storage on Sugar Drive about one mile east of 30a on the south side of highway 98 on Wednesday Feb. 25th and every Wednesday in March from 3:00PM till 4:00.

Our creative writers have been very busy with organizer Bob Algie and group instructor Tom Mahar

leading the way. Congratulations to Bob Algie for best SHORT STORY and Hansell Winsloe for best OPENING LINE. Newcomers are welcome on Mondays from 2pm till 4pm at 2746 Scenic Gulf Drive or call Bob at 267-4083.

The Seaside Neighbourhood School group requires volunteers for its half marathon and 5 k fundraiser run on March 1st at Seaside. Get yourself a free teeshirt and watch the runners. Please call Laurel Vermillion at 847-323-6806 or email her at vermillion@sbcglobal.net if you would like to help. Other opportunities for volunteering in the community consist of Habitat for Humanity 835-0067, Heritage Museum 678-2615, United Way 244-7696 and Water quality monito ring 729-6424.

The last General Meeting will take place on March 4th at 10:00 am at The Santa Rosa Community Church about 3 miles east of 30a on the north side of 98. Remember that this General Meeting along with the Ladies' Luncheon and the Dinner/Dance at Embassy Suites will all have limited parking available and will require car pooling for everybody!

Carol Addington and the Snowbird Singers will be giving a farewell concert on Saturday, February 28th at 3:00pm at the Santa Rosa Community Church about 3 miles east of 30a on the north side of highway 98. Please bring a donation for the Church and enjoy this wonderful group with a guest appearance by harpist Katie Ott Demeester. Once again car pooling would be a good idea as this facility has limited parking.

If you would be interested in joining a BLUEGRASS GROUP Charlie Johnson 837-4700 will give you all the details. They meet every Tuesday afternoon from 1:00 till 4:00 pm and play banjo, guitar, keyboard, violin and anything else you can find at the OWNERS' ROOM of Surfside.

Vivek Likhite would like everyone to know that tennis at Mainsail is going strongly with over forty players of all abilities participating. Please call Vivek at 837-3037 for details if you would like to join them.

Over 100 people took part in the first annual Presidents' Cup for men with the Canadian men playing against the U.S. men. At the same time the Snowbird women played in a charity scramble with all participants having a great time at the Oaks of Fort Walton Beach. Special thanks to Mike Serniuk who organized everything and handed out myriad prizes for nearly half the field. Check our website at www.waltoncountysnowbirds.com

to get a list of remaining play days.

Euchre continues to be a popular event with nearly 80 people playing every Friday night at the Good News United Methodist Church. Last week in the ladies' division Paul Smithers (playing as a woman) was first followed by Loreen Morgan,Lyn Ward and Connie DeMar. Joe Delaney was the leading man followed by Frank Lawless and Dunning Bulman.

Finally we are trying to organize a fishing charter on Thursday March 26th for between 6 and 12 people. The target species will be amberjack, trigger fish and 3 lb. Mingo snapper. Please call me at 269-2773 for more information. Brian Cosgrove nancyandbrian@hotmail.com
