Lifeguard tryouts

SWFD’s Beach Safety Division will hold run/swim tryouts beginning Feb. 2.  Candidates must complete at 500-meter swim in less than 10 minutes, be in good physical condition, be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma. Lifeguard positions require working weekends and holidays. All candidates are subject to passing a background check/drug screen. Candidates must also complete a 40-hour open water lifeguard orientation and DOT First Responder Course.

Woodie Long exhibit

Northwest Florida Ballet

The Northwest Florida Ballet presents The Ruby Celebration Jan. 30 at the Sandestin Hilton will feature gourmet food, ruby wine and the celebration of dance. Tickets will be $60 each and made available in the fall.

Art in Public Places

The Walton County Tourist Development Council and Friends of Coastal Brach Library will exhibit the works of Lois Kennedy during the Art in Public Places exhibit in February.

 

Coastal Dune Lakes

A Coastal Dune Lakes of the World presentation by Elam Stoltzfus, with Friends of Scenic 30A as host, will take place at 5 p.m. Feb. 1 at 70 Logan Lane in Grayton Beach. Stoltzfus will talk about the opportunity to tell the dune lake story, how this connects to commerce, eoctourism, education, restoration, research and other interests. Call 267-1955.

The Wedding Singer

The Wedding Singer will bring back the 80s when it dances into the Pensacola Saenger Theatre for one performance only at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 2.

Girls’ Getaway Weekend

Girls’ Getaway Weekend, Feb. 4-7 in Rosemary Beach, will offer friends and families a chance to relax and rejuvenate while they help feed hungry families in Walton County. The Rosemary Beach Foundation will donate net proceeds from this event to the local food bank, Caring & Sharing.

•Feb. 4: Writers In The Round with Nashville songwriters Tiffany Goss, Brandy Clark and Denise Locke.

•Feb. 5: Happy hour reception will feature wine, food, sponsor displays and the l creations of mixed-media artist, Alexa Lett. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet guest writer Lisa Patton, author of “Whistlin’ Dixie in a Nor’easter.”

•Feb. 6: Virginia Willis, who started her career as an apprentice to Nathalie Dupree before working for Martha Stewart Living Television, will share brunch recipes and family stories from her cookbook, “Bon Appétit, Y’all.” Dinner and concert features entertainment by Jessi Alexander, Melissa Peirce and Natalie Hemby.

 

Public forum

The E. O. Wilson Biophilia Center will sponsor a public forum on the proposal to allow oil and gas drilling in Florida state waters from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 4 at the South Walton High School Auditorium, 645 Greenway Trail in Santa Rosa Beach. Everyone is invited to attend. The forum would welcome the attendance of local leaders.

 

Friday, Feb. 5

 

First Friday

The First Friday ArtWalk will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 5 at Ruskin Place & Central Square. Enjoy live music and view works of art and artist demos at the galleries and shops.

 

Beach Mardi Gras Festival and Parade

The Second Annual Panama City Beach Mardi Gras Festival and Parade will be held Feb. 5-6 at Pier Park. The fun begins at noon Feb. 5 as the streets of Pier Park are closed to vehicular traffic for a festive street party including live bands and entertainment, Cajun fare, float tours along with beads and doubloons aplenty. The evening culminates with a fireworks display over the Gulf of Mexico.

Magic Broadcasting’s Island 106 radio personality, “That Guy Kramer”, will broadcast live starting at 10 a.m. Feb. 6 as festivities kick-off with a children’s parade, followed by the Mardi Gras parade at 2 p.m. along Front Beach Road through Pier Park. The street party celebration continues with live entertainment, costumes, masks, beads, trinkets, Cajun and low-country cuisine, and more.

Used Book Sale

The Friends of the Coastal Branch Library will hold a Used Book Sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Coastal Branch Library, 427 Greenway Trail.

Breakfast with a Ranger

Join the Rangers and ask them all the questions you can think of about park life at 9 a.m. Feb. 6 at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park in Santa Rosa Beach. To cover the cost of food, please bring $4, which goes to Friends of Topsail Hill Preserve State Park to enhance the park, or bring your own breakfast. Call 267-8330.

 

Mattie Kelly Arts Center

Upcoming

Seaside Neighborhood School registration

Registration for the Seaside Neighborhood School 2010-2011 school year has begun. Applications must be completed and submitted with proof of Walton County residency by April 30 to be entered into the lottery.  The school is a public charter middle school.  Applications are available in the school office or at www.seasideschool.net. Siblings of current SNS students must also complete an application for enrollment and submit  by April 30.  The lottery drawing will take place at the school on May 25.
