Dressed in blues to raise some green
In his dress uniform, United States Marine Corps sergeant Micah Berg smiled when asked about the fundraising effort that will save his shiny black Corvette.
"I'm not worried about that," he said. "Dressed like this, I hope 1,000 people will give me $100 that day."
On Oct. 13, Berg will join Porsche owners at the Porsche Club's Charity Car Show at Destin Commons. Berg has promised to sell his prized 2002 Z06 Corvette if the North Florida Region Porsche Club, the sponsor of the car show, doesn't reach its fundraising goal of $100,000.
The money will be donated to Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast's expansion of its heart and vascular services. Last year the club donated more than $41,000 to the Sacred Heart Foundation.
Visitors to the car show vote for their favorite car with a monetary donation. The car that earns the most money is the "Best of Show."
While the organizers anticipate a good turnout for the event and hope for generous donations, the car show is only one aspect of the fundraising. Club members ask friends, family members, clients and co-workers to contribute.
"Most of the money is raised the week before the show," Porsche Club member Alabama Charlie McPeak said.
