Niceville's Deloach signs with Spring Hill basketball
Three years ago, Niceville senior John Deloach picked up a basketball for the first time.
Earlier this week, Deloach, a towering 6-foot-9 center on the Eagles’ first final four team since 1966, signed his name to scholarship papers to continue his basketball career at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala.
Deloach, a two-year varsity member at Niceville, finished his senior campaign averaging 7.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game in helping the Eagles to a 27-4 record that district and regional titles.
Niceville coach Jerome Strutchen attributed Deloach’s work ethic in landing the scholarship. Deloach, meanwhile, credited his coach.
“I ended up trying out and I wasn’t very good,” Deloach said. “I was goofy and uncoordinated, but coach Strutchen worked with me and got me to be what I am now.”
Spring Hill College competes in the NAIA’s Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, where last season the Badgers finished 15-14 overall, 8-10 in league play. Spring Hill College is the first Catholic college in the Southeast and is the fifth oldest Catholic college in America.
