No grumbles, no groans, just grins

For editorial writers, topic selection often manifests itself as a bit of a problem.
It isn't that there's an absence of topics. To the contrary, the problem is choosing from an overabundance of nasty little - or big - topics such as private property rights, big government, secretive sheriffs, fishing regulations, etc. And frankly those topics more often than not present themselves as relatively easy targets.
What we regrettably too often overlook are opportunities to pat someone on the back or congratulate someone or some organization on reaching a milestone. For today at least, we will set course for a bit of oversight correction.
On April 26, the South Walton Chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association held its Second Annual Kid's Fishing Tournament in Grayton Beach. Organizers tout the free event as a way to promote responsible recreational fishing and conservation.
What a wonderful way to get youngsters familiar with the joys of fishing. If you saw the photos, you could read the enjoyment in the smiles of not only the kids, but also the participating adults.
With our abundant fishing opportunities along our shores - and even in the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Choctawhatchee Bay - teaching children the joys of the catch can never be taught too early. And when you add lessons about conservation, you plant the seeds for the growth of responsible citizens. Kudos go to the local CCA chapter on the success of this year's event.
Spin the clock forward to this week.
Today and tomorrow mark the culmination of the 20th anniversary of ArtsQuest. What began as a one-day event where they had to almost beg artists to show up has blossomed into a week-long artistic extravaganza.
Organizers this week have offered a wide variety of events including a choir performance, sunset toast, fashion show and luncheon, student art exhibits, a shopping tour, and of course the fine arts show - including entertainment - that runs today and tomorrow at The Village of Baytowne Wharf.
Today's show will feature artists displaying a wide variety of works ranging from photography to oil paintings to sculpture to watercolors to jewelry and much more. If you enjoy outstanding art in any form, ArtsQuest is an event you won't want to miss. The temperatures should be perfect and the humidity low. What better way to spend a few hours of your weekend browsing the works of some amazing artists?
