Everything you want to know about hurricanes and more
Hurricanes might have different names in different parts of the world such as typhoons and tropical cyclones but they are still hurricanes.
These and other interesting facts about hurricanes were explained via a hurricane informational teleconference Sept. 20 to Butler Elementary School's 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.
The students congregated in the school's Media Center for the fourth annual hurricane informational teleconference conducted by weatherbug.com.
The Hurricane Season 2007 conference call included 34 schools in 22 states and involved at least 1,000 children.
Weatherbug Meteorologist Joe explained that to be classified as a hurricane, the winds must be sustained at 74 mph, and the season begins June 1 each year.
He also told students where hurricanes are likely to form during which month during the hurricane season.
The students listened quietly as Joe talked and they viewed visual-aid slides.
According to the Weatherbug Web site, using the learning aid typically resulted in higher student test scores, as well as helping teachers meet state standard requirements.
