UPDATE: Suspect in custody after Tyndall lockdown

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE — A U.S. Army reservist has been arrested after a domestic violence incident that began just before 11 a.m. on Saturday.

No one was seriously injured. The suspect’s identity had not been released as of Saturday night.

Brig. Gen. Jack McMullen, the 325 Fighter Wing commander, spoke Saturday afternoon about the incident.

“Our security forces got a call about a domestic disturbance in one of the neighborhoods here on base,” McMullen said. “As they were responding, an individual who was part of the disturbance ran out of the back of the house armed with some sort of handgun. He made his way off into the woods.”

McMullen said security officers started to put a barricade around the woods where he was at, and it was at that time they “locked down” the base. A loud speaker call went out that the base was on lock down, the general said.

The victim was an Air Force service member. The suspect is a “dependent” of the Air Force service member. The base was on lock down for about two hours. For that time period, no vehicles or personnel were allowed on or off the base. At one point, a long line of vehicles was backed up in front of the base on U.S. 98.

The man was persuaded to surrender.

“He came out of the woods on his own,” McMullen said.

As of Saturday afternoon, the suspect was in custody. He is currently being held on the air base.

Jeffrey S. Adams, defense force commander for Tyndall, said patrols were called to the scene after a neighbor called and reported hearing an argument in an adjacent dwelling. Security officers were at the scene within  about four minutes after the call came in.

“It started out as a routine situation and quickly started escalating to where there was a potential for violence,” Adams said.

Adams said the suspect was on the run for about two hours before he was apprehended.

“He laid down his firearm and came out,” Adams.

Bay County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the search and arrest of the suspect.

After the suspect was arrested, the lockdown was lifted and traffic flow and the base gates were reopened.

An investigation is ongoing and no further details were released.

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE — Tyndall Air Force Base was put on lock-down for several hours Saturday after a domestic violence situation occurred at roughly 11 a.m., Brig. Gen. John McMullen confirmed.

The domestic situation was between a U.S. Army Reservist who lived on the base and his wife in a residence in base housing. No one was shot or seriously injured.

When Air Force security and Bay County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, the suspect fled out the back door of the residence into a wooded area. Air Force security contacted the individual in the woods and convinced the suspect to surrender. He was taken into custody by the Air Force, which credited the Sheriff’s Office for its assistance.
