Dennis Lowery Jr.
Dennis Lowery Jr., 68, of Freeport, passed away July 16, 2010, at the VA Hospital in Biloxi, Miss. He was born in Pensacola in 1942 to Dennis A. Lowery and Iduma Gray Lowery, paternal grandson of Acy and Mary L. Lowery and maternal grandson of George Gray and Bertha Robinson.
He is survived by, Johnnie Lowery, the love of his life and caregiver; sister, Shirley (Buddy) Clemmons of Freeport and their children, Cindy (Gary) of Texas, Bill (Tammy) of Foley, Ala.; and brother, George (Faye) Lowery of Freeport.
Also surviving are children, Saronda Lewis of Freeport, Danny Johnson of Marrero, La., Beverly Moore of Crestview, Terri Summers of North Port, Fla., Timothy Lowery of Freeport and Christina Evans of DeFuniak Springs; grandchildren, Dana King, Kayla Dodge, Robyn Lewis, Jonathon Moore, Marissa Lowery, Sara Boudreaux, Madison Lewis, Macey Lowery, Tracey Lowery, Breanna Lowery, Garrett Glisson, Guylan Glisson and Mark Christopher Lowery; great-grandchildren, Molly Dodge and Kaylie Lowery; sisters-in-law, Hattie Caswell and children and Barbara Madden and children; and brother-in-law, Ray Brown and children. Ray was a special lifelong friend — they shared many mischievous childhood pranks, days and nights boating and fishing, and moments of reminiscing in the swing with a cup of coffee. He is also survived by aunts, uncles and many lifelong friends.
Dennis served his country in the U.S. Navy as an anti aircraft submarine warfare technician and was a whiz at electronics. He enjoyed woodworking and all water activities, with boating and fishing his favorite until 1997, when a massive stroke left him speech-impaired and with limited mobility.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. July 27 at Black Creek Methodist Church in Freeport with the Rev. Horace McCormick officiating. Interment will be at 2 p.m. in Pensacola at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors.
The devastating effects of smoking for 40 years had caused lung cancer which had consumed his body, and death occurred nine days after being diagnosed.
