Students read more than 7 million words

Local author and poet Paul Arthur performs his poem “The First Day” in costume as Mrs. McGee during Van R. Butler Elementary’s Literary Week Jan. 23-27.

The third and fourth grades held a contest to see which class could read the most words during the week.

The winner was Mr. Cothrans fourth grade class, which read 1,344,433 words, followed by Ms. Chua’s third grade with 1,079,738 words, and Mrs. Talaska’s third grade with 709, 489 words.

In total, the third and fourth graders read 7,488,266 words for the week. The event was capped off with a poetry contest and performance.
