INLET BEACH — Home run record holder Mark McGwire finally came clean on his steroid use in 1998, the year he broke the record. People were shocked; Sammy Sosa's face turned white as a sheet when he heard. So, let's sum up the past deca
I can only imagine the volume of mail you will receive since the last issue of the Walton Sun. I can also anticipate the content of each "Letter to the Editor" since it has all been said before.
I never read the article in the Daily News about the cause of the fire at Johnny McTighe’s because my husband hid the paper from me. But after getting a few emails from friends, I knew I couldn't even look at the photo or read anything about this fire in the Walton Sun because it would have been too painful.

To say this subject hit a nerve is putting it mildly.
I have owned my two parrots for about 20 years and they are beautiful, intelligent, remarkable creatures who turn on themselves in captivity if they are not mentally stimulated because they have the mentality of a 3-year-old child. They also have an extremely long lifespan and larger breeds like the Macaw can live up to 100 years if cared for properly.
I am also aware that the owner of McTighe's Pub states he has owned these birds for 20 some years. But the fact remains they were left outside in this severe cold — covered deck or not, heater or not, makes no difference.
I have no clue what type of tropical parrots were destroyed in this fire but we are not talking about a dog or a cat here that could certainly be outdoors in these cold temperatures. These were tropical birds that live in a tropical environment, and they cannot survive in this cold and they need more specialized care than your average dog or cat. They should have been maintained in someone’s home. A simple draft could kill these animals or make them extremely ill.
There is no doubt the offshore drilling subject is important to a lot of folks and I understand that. I only hope this letter also raises awareness about a subject that is also important and near and dear to my heart.
