Snowbird dinner dance is Monday evening

For some of us poor souls, only one month more remains in our southern sojourn, this side of the Mason-Dixon line. Before we mourn our loss, we can always think of all those gleeful people back home who await our wit, our culinary skills, babysitting qualities, a lawn to mow, a bigger residence to clean. Oh dear, why not pay the extra baggage and stay a month longer, postponing the inevitable. My husband and I stay until May, but I must admit, we’re hiding from those responsibilities. It makes us more desirable to those who miss us.

So, if you are reading this article for the first time, know that there are no more opportunities to register as a Walton County Snowbird this year. You will have to wait till next season to enjoy the abundance of activities offered by this volunteer organization, some 2,000 members strong.

For the membership, there’s still time this weekend to give chair Al Francis a call, (850) 654-7716, and join your friends in a dinner/dance opportunity at the Lucky Snapper - 5 o’clock cocktails, Dutch treat, and buffet appetizer and dinner at 6 p.m. on Monday, the 18th of February. There’ll be music and dancing provided by “Sticks and Stones” from 7 to 10 p.m. This is a change of venue for our usual dinner dance and should yield a wonderful evening, also celebrating President’s Day.

Get a jump on the book for discussion “Memory Keepers Daughter” by Kim Edwards scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 6 at the Beach Retreat Clubhouse. Check with volunteer chair Valerie Beall, (850) 837-8624 for details.

Euchre winners for Feb. 5 were Connie Taylor and Eunice Collins - 1st; Roberta Crawford - 3rd; Lyn Ward - 4th. The leaders in the men’s division were Jack Kane, Wendel Wasnick and Joe Delaney.

The next general meeting is on Wednesday, March 5 at the Destiny Worship Center, 10 a.m., with the Snowbird Singers offering up an entertaining program under the directorship of Carol Addington. The new slate of officers will be presented at that time in addition to the drawing of abundant door prizes.

Mega kudos go to the co-chairwomen of the ladies luncheon, Shirley Northcross and Pat Gervais, and also to their capable committee. With such a vital interest in this event, which necessitated a waiting list, the search is on for even a more spacious venue. Thank you, one and all, for providing a wonderfully memorable afternoon.

The storage people will be on hand at the Affordable Storage on Sugar Drive from 3 - 4 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27 and same time every Friday in March. You must have previously registered as a Walton County Snowbird, and know that if your return to the area next year is hampered by health or welfare, contact the volunteer chair, Don Gehrke, (850) 837-9937, so that you can make arrangements to keep your items in storage another year. Unclaimed buckets and bikes and sundry are offered to Goodwill.

The rumors are rampant that the discussion group, delving into a variety of subjects, is increasing in numbers due to interest, and meet 6:30 to 8 p.m. every Wednesday evening at the Beach Retreat Clubhouse. Prospective writers also meet at the same place, Mondays, 2 - 4 p.m., both under the leadership of Bob Algie, (850) 267-4113.

Keep in mind that tennis, bridge, euchre, mah jongg, line dancing, ballroom dancing, exercise, snowbird singers, computer, singles, art workshop and bowling are ongoing, and information about their meeting times can be accessed via the Web site: www.waltoncountysnowbirds.com

February play days for golf are the 21st at Adara, the 24th and 25th at Regatta and the 26th at Foxwood Country Club. Details are on the Web site. Also note that because of cancellation due to rain at the Santa Rosa Beach Golf Club, the club is offering golf to the Walton County Snowbirds on Saturdays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays after noon and before 2 p.m. As with all activities, your membership in Walton County Snowbirds is a prerequisite. Keep your card handy, and check the Web site for details.

To see if there are any remaining slots for the Feb. 20 scramble at Eglin and the March 5 scramble at Adara, call the Dickensons, (850) 837-1457 to make arrangements.

Don’t forget to give Dr. David Ott’s informative lecture on musicians of yesteryear and the conditions that existed at the time of their creativity. That can be had on Mondays, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Destiny Worship Center.

Stay well, dear friends and practice your shivers just in case you have to head home to the northland before your time.

Nancy Gehrke is the information officer for the Walton County Snowbirds. She can be reached at (850) 837-9937 and nagehrke@yahoo.com. Event information is available on the Web site, www.waltoncountysnowbirds.com.
