Woman flown to hospital after Mossy Head emu run-in

MOSSY HEAD - A woman had to be flown to the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center after being clawed by an emu shortly after 4 p.m., Sunday.

The animal was not a pet. The woman was trying to corral some emus and take them to an animal shelter. The emu cut her arm in the process.

Tom Jones, a Mossy Head firefighter paramedic who responded to the call, said he would not consider the incident an attack. He said any animal would kick and try to get away from someone trying to corral it.

“I don’t think it was being vicious or anything. I think it was just acting like an animal is supposed to act,” Jones said. “It just happens that she got in the way of a claw.”

The woman was treated and released Sunday evening.
