Wakulla continues domination of Walton in romp
DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — Walton’s bid to snap a seven-game losing streak to Wakulla started with a flourish but ended with a thud.
Walton weathered a poor start in which an interception return and a blocked punt put the Braves in a 14-0 hole before much of the Homecoming court had settled into their seats with two quick scores of their own, knotting the score at 14-14.
From there, little went right for Walton.
Wakulla (6-1) scored on its next five possessions and extended its winning streak over the Braves to eight games with an emphatic 49-20 win at Yates Memorial Stadium.
After knotting the score at 14-all on a second touchdown pass from quarterback Liam Miller, Walton appeared to have regained control of the contest when the Braves recovered the ensuing onside attempt.
It proved to be only a mirage.
Walton (2-6) missed on a 36-yard field goal try, giving the ball back to Wakulla, which promptly marched 60 yards into the end zone on a 27-yard run from Antonio Kilpatrick to snatch a 21-14 lead.
Miller appeared to have the Braves on the march once more as a drive that originated from Walton’s own 3 quickly crossed midfield. But after Miller found Levi Shipper for a 25-yard gain, Shipper was stripped of the ball and lost possession.
Wakulla cashed in on the second Walton turnover when running back Willie Thomas took the handoff on a draw and rumbled 13 yards for the touchdown to give the War Eagles a 28-14 lead.
In the second half, Wakulla scored on each of its first three possessions, churning out 267 yards rushing on the night to just 43 yards through the air.
Walton, meanwhile, finished the night with 356 yards of offense as Miller finished the night 32-of-49 passing for 317 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Brandt Ellenberg caught an 8-yard touchdown pass and Corliss Stone added a 6-yarder.
Stone made 14 receptions for 145 yards.
