Youth Leadership class offered at Walton High School

The Walton Area Chamber of Commerce’s Education Council announced that Walton High School is now offering the Youth Leadership Class to its junior and seniors for the 2011/2012 School year.

The Walton High School Youth Leadership inaugural class has 22  students led by Kim Handdrop. In this class, the students will participate in character and ethics building exercises, prepare for and execute a “Mock Trial” with Judge Kelvin Wells, learn the importance of professional appearance in the business world as well as proper interview techniques and complete the Kendall Life Languages Program, taught by Dan Marcinkowski.

Walton County School Superintendent, Carlene Anderson said, ”I am very excited about having the Youth Leadership class now available at Walton High School. There is a lot of talent among our students, and we are anxious to tap into that talent for this program.”

The Youth Leadership Program was the brainchild of Superintendent Anderson and former President and CEO of the Walton Area Chamber, Dawn Moliterno. Now in its fourth year, it has been taught at South Walton High and Freeport High each semester. The goal of the program, which is supported by the Walton Area Chamber’s Education Council, is to offer this class in all four high schools in Walton County.

“The Chamber is proud to be a part of the development and education of the future leaders of our community and look forward to growing the Youth Leadership program into all of our schools, said Walton Area Chamber President/CEO, Kitty Whitney. “Bridging education and business is a key component of the chamber and we strive to exceed our goals in that area.”

The Walton Area Chamber’s Education Council continued their support of the education system by partnering up with the Walton Education Foundation to host the First Apple Classic Fun Run, held Jan. 21 at Hammock Bay in Freeport. Volunteers from WEF, local schools and the Walton Area Chamber were on hand to register the runners and assist with race details for  more than 100 participants of the run. All of the proceeds from this event go to support the Walton County School System via the Walton Education Foundation.
