Sheriffs department hosts public safety education event
The Walton County Sheriff's Office, along with the South Walton Fire District and AirHeart, held a public safety education event Sept. 20 at the Santa Rosa Beach substation.
The event was held to teach approximately 20 homeschooled children and their parents about the virtues of public safety and various equipment that is utilized in search and rescue.
Members of the Walton County Sheriff's Office's Beach Patrol, Aviation and Traffic units displayed their equipment and answered questions, such as: how many people can the helicopter carry? And, how do you get the gurney in and out of the helicopter?
Students and parents were able to inspect the helicopter, rescue boat, all-terrain vehicle, jet skis, patrol car and motorcycle.
A Beach Patrol officer also explained about rip currents and the warning flag system.
AirHeart paramedic Billy Welche answered questions about their medical rescue helicopter and its role in medical responses, and South Walton Fire District Sgt. Jimmy White talked to everyone about fire rescue operations and the functions of their fire truck and ambulance.
The homeschooled group was part of a group from Destiny Worship Center in Miramar Beach led by Lynette Dungan.
