Lady Seahawks sink Graceville

After one of the biggest comeback victories a month ago on the road, the South Walton Seahawks handled the Graceville Tigers a little easier on Friday with a 48-34 win at home in Santa Rosa Beach in girls basketball action.

Back in December at Graceville, the Lady Seahawks were down 23 points with two minutes left in the third and came back to win the game 62-61.

On Friday, once the Seahawks took the lead at the end of the first quarter, there was no catching up with them.

“I was very pleased with us defensively,” said South Walton Coach Kevin Craig. “We really stifled them.”

Offense, however, was a different story.

“I thought we were stagnant on offense. There was a lot of standing around. We also missed a ton of free throws and we miss a lot of layups.”

Even so, with the win, the Lady Seahawks are the No. 1 seed going into the District 2 Class 2A tournament in Cottondale next week.

In Friday’s game, Jamie Delaney led the Seahawks with 15 points. Alex Lovell scored eight points and Tiffany Snider hit for seven. Scoring six each were Samantha Snider and Mackenzie Watson. Julie Williamson hit for five.

South Walton took an early 6-0 lead on shots from Tiffany Snider, Delaney and Samantha Snider. The Tigers came back with six of their own. In the final seconds, Watson knocked down a 3-pointer to put the Seahawks on top for good.

In the first four minutes of the second, South Walton pulled away by as much as 14 points on inside shots and free throws. Graceville clawed its way back in the game with baskets from Mychea Williams and Wynterra Pittman. By the half, South Walton was holding on to a 26-19 lead.

The third quarter was low scoring for both squads with South Walton hitting for six and Graceville five.

Early in the fourth, the Tigers came within six points of the Seahawks but that was as close as they would come. In the last two minutes, South Walton went to the free-throw line six times and hit six of 12 tries for a 48-34 finish.

The Seahawks last regular season game is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Vernon against the Yellow Jackets.
