TDC announces ‘Art in School' contest winners
The Walton County Tourist Development Council announces the winners from the National Tourism Week: Art in Schools Contest. A panel of community judges reviewed the artwork and selected a winner from each of the grade level divisions.
The winners are as follows:
• Division K-2: Brianna Nobles, West DeFuniak Elementary
• Division 3-5: Alexandra Hernandez, Van R. Butler Elementary
• Division 6-8: Tiffany Graham, Walton Middle School
• Division 9-10: Andrew Hart, Freeport High School
• Division 11-12: Faith Whitley, Freeport High School
“We are so proud of all the students who entered and especially want to congratulate our winners,” said Tiffany McCaskill, new product development manager for the TDC. “We have learned that there is an abundance of young artists in Walton County.”
The contest held in partnership with the Walton County School District encouraged students to engage in the arts. Art teachers worked with students to create art that symbolized the Tourism Week theme: Discover Great American Traditions. Mediums accepted included anything from crayon to pencil drawings to photography.
The winning artwork was matted and has been on display at the TDC’s Visitors Information Center during May as a part of the TDC’s Art in Public Places program. In addition, the winning artwork can be viewed at the Beaches of South Walton’s official Web site at www.beachesofsouthwalton.com.
“With 86 entries from students throughout Walton County, the first year of the contest was a great success,” said McCaskill. “We definitely want to continue the program and look forward to working with the art teachers and students to grow the program over the coming years.”
Students with winning artwork were provided prizes from local businesses and artists, including 2008 Artist of the Year Donna Burgess, 2006 Artist of the Year Phil Kiser, Grit & Grace Production Inc., The Ard Gallery and Wal-Mart - Defuniak Springs.
