Standing up to bullies: Teacher parent writes a book
Brenda Jones is a stand-up kind of gal. Both as a teacher and a parent, Jones well understands the importance of helping kids respond effectively to inappropriate bullying on the part of their peers. With violence in schools a fact of contemporary life, Jones' book offers advice both practical and necessary.
Teaching at various schools in Walton County for nine years, Jones is now working with 4th graders at Shalimar Elementary. Her desire to help kids understand and react positively in situations where they may be verbally and/or physically challenged by peers extends beyond her own family and classroom, however.
Jones is excited to be sharing her parenting and teaching experience with a much wider audience through the publication of her first book.
Entitled "Standing Up," the 57 page soft cover book is an easy-to-read primer for elementary and middle-school boys and girls on dealing with bullies. Set in Destin, the book tells the story of Jones' son, Casey, and how he learns to deal with a bully on the bus. It contains many references to local color -- including alligators and water moccasins -- to which students in the panhandle can readily relate.
"I know this is a big problem in schools," said Jones. "My book is factual and based on my own family's experience."
Florida's School Safety and Security Act governs the practices of schools in ensuring the safety of students while using transportation as well as in class. Jones' book clearly and engagingly details the emotions, language and thought processes of a young man caught in the classic dilemma - being an outsider confronted by a clique headed by a bully.
Casey's solution, guided by his teacher mother, involves enlisting a friend, confronting his own fear, and successfully "outing" the bully - who proves to be somewhat less than omnipotent, once exposed.
With teacher activities and literature circle activities (before, during and after reading) fully explained, the book clearly demonstrates the author's familiarity with its application in school. Just released, Jones has already placed 20 copies with the Walton School District's safety supervisor. And bullies had better be advised.
