Alaqua’s Mother of the Year

Jade is a three-year-old Hound/Pointer mix that dreams of finding a home to call her own. She is very sweet and loves to play with other dogs. Jade would love for her home to have a fenced yard, as she is a pretty big dog and needs lots of room to run and play. With Alaqua's help, she raised her family, and now hopes to be able to share her love with her very own human. Come out to Alaqua to meet Jade, you won't regret it!

Special to The Sun

I am honored that I have been selected as Mother of the Year and Pet of Week. I owe Alaqua so much, and I wanted to let them know how thankful I am. You know how mothers are always doing things for others, because that's just the way we are? And I know there are a lot of you trying to think of something special to give your Mom this Mother's Day. If you haven't gotten a gift for your Mom, I ask that you consider a donation to Alaqua Animal Refuge. By doing this, you will help me to “pay it forward.” With your donation, given in your Mother's honor, Alaqua will be able to help other doggie Mothers, those that are lost and alone like I was. Alaqua will be able to continue its mission of helping the homeless, helpless, and abandoned pets, just like they helped me! It will be the gift that will help others.

I believe I was selected as Mother of the Year because I had so many puppies! Now, as all Mothers know, we only do what is best for our family. Way back in January, I was lost, hungry, alone and burdened with my eminent delivery. It was cold, and I was so frightened. Finally, a Good Samaritan arrived to help me. I was so thankful! This nice lady took me to a very kind veterinarian in the Chipley area. They provided me with the best of care, and performed a C-Section to help me deliver 19 puppies! Yes, that is right. Nineteen puppies!

Soon, these nice people were trying to find a rescue shelter to save us. As always, Alaqua stepped up and offered a safe haven for me and my family. We packed up for departure when my pups were just one day old. Sadly, by the time we arrived at Alaqua, there were only 13 puppies alive.

We were given the best of veterinary care, shelter and nutrition at Alaqua. Over time, sadly, I lost three more puppies, due to illnesses, but Alaqua continued to provide for our every need. They spayed and neutered each of my puppies, so that they would never have to endure the life I have led. They socialized us with other dogs, which was very important, as they wanted all of us to find our very own home. Alaqua found wonderful homes for each of my babies. They would tell me every time one of them went to their forever home! This brought me so much joy. All the while they were caring for my pups they began to also focus on me. You see I had never had anyone take such good care of me. I was a lost dog, with little hope, and only three and a half years old! I began to learn how to be a good doggie myself. They gave me lots of love, good nutrition, and began to rehabilitate me. So, you see, I could never have cared for my family without the kindness of Alaqua. I owe this award to them.

Please remember your Mom on Mother's Day. You only have one Mother, show her how much you love her, by donating to Alaqua. It will be like Moms helping Moms, and I can't think of a better gift. Happy Mother's Day!
