In January 2013, a women’s networking group began in DeFuniak Springs.
Founded by Kim Wennerberg, with help from her steering committee, Mary Burns, Julie White and Kasey Cuchens, The Luminary Connection is a warm, inviting setting for professional women.
“Our desire is to network and learn what business opportunities like minded women can create with one another,” Wennerberg told The Sun. “To address through biblical teachings how to manage the daily struggles we women experience both in the workplace and at home.”
Meetings are held from 12-1 p.m. the third Thursday of the month at the Life Enrichment Senior Center on College Avenue.
“I just felt God leading me to do something more ... to show His love better, to use some of the gifts He has given me ... to bless others and be blessed at the same time,” Wennerberg said. “To learn from other women and in turn, do more business together as a result.”
Not knowing exactly which direction to take, Wennerberg considered how God could best use her. During this time, she met a man who had started a men’s Christian networking group in Georgia.
“I thought, ‘Hey, now that's something I can do!’”
Wennerberg, never married has been in the business world since her mid 20s, and knows the pitfalls, obstacles and struggles she has encountered.
“I never had that type of group or support and wondered how it might have been easier with some Godly and biblical advice along the way,” she said. “… the opportunity to seek out other Christian women with whom to do business.”
Hoping to share some of those lessons with other Christian ladies, and also be a support group for other women, Wennerberg decided to take action.
“I just simply didn't know of any other business networking group, whether specifically for women or co-ed, that existed in my area,” she said. “With the encouragement and support from the steering committee, that is what we did. I couldn't have done this in a million years without them.”
TLC is open to all working women — those employed, retired or preparing to return to the workforce. Meetings are about 45 minutes and attendees are able to bring a brown bag lunch and eat while sharing and networking.
“I love the concept of drawing from others' experiences and providing an environment for that,” she said. “I'll never stop learning and this group is no exception.”
The name, The Luminary Connection, was chosen because it was apparent to the founders that the lowest common denominator for their goals was to join biblical principles with business practices.
“Since He is the source of light, we need to plug in to Him so that His light can shine through us in every area of our lives,” Wennerberg said. “In essence, we need to stay connected to the illuminator at all times.”
