Cause and effect refers to the circumstance in which an action or event will produce another event. The Emerald Coast enjoys an annual demonstration of the phenomenon when temperatures in states north of the Florida state line dip below the comfort zone.

That is when snowbirds pack their duds and head for temperate climates in late October for stays that often extend into May. For them, the Walton County Snowbird Club is on hand to give snowbirds the means to make new friends and join in a wide variety of pleasant and often challenging activities.

Early arriving snowbirds check out the area to see what changes took place since the preceding season, especially in area restaurants and golf courses, in order that they may report their findings to those who follow in early December and January. That is when hundreds more appear at Faith Assembly Fellowship Hall, 306 South Geronimo Street in Miramar Beach, to add their names to the annual membership roll.

Registering with the Walton County Snowbirds provides a great opportunity for first time and returning snowbirds to take advantage of valuable golf promotions at area courses and to win bargain-rate dining at many of the region’s fine restaurants. The first registration of the season takes place from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Nov. 26 when snowbirds will receive a warm welcome and a menu of entertaining and educational opportunities. Registration will continue each Monday, including Dec. 3, 10, 17, and Jan. 2 and then continue each Monday through Feb. 11. The registration fee, good for the entire year, is a budget conscious $9.

The first general meeting will occur at 10 a.m. Dec. 12 at the Destin Life Center Building of the Destin United Methodist Church, 200 Beach Drive, where once again great door prizes and entertainment await attending members.

For those who like to make merry and exchange gifts can give themselves a Christmas present by attending the annual Christmas Dinner at the Embassy Suites on Old 98. Get tickets Nov. 26, Dec. 3 or 10 at Faith Assembly Fellowship Hall during member registration.

Dotty Caskey, who organizes the Snowbird Ensemble, has a shout out to all who share a penchant for woodwinds. Instrumentalists looking for a group to join should call Dotty at cell 502-724-1791 or email her at dotty_lee@msn.com to gain a spot in this expanding group. She welcomes contributions of music for sharing. If you cannot toot your own horn, don’t let that spoil your fun Dotty says; instruments can be rented locally.
