A stellar performance at cheer camp this summer has earned the Rocky Bayou Christian School spirit and competition cheerleading squad a bid to compete nationally in January. While competing at the Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders (FCC) camp in July, the 11-member team placed in the top three teams in their division to win their spot at the 25th Anniversary FCC Nationals this winter in Orlando, Fla.

Captained by RBCS seniors, Alyssa Slagle of Miramar Beach and Payton Denbow of Hammock Bay, the team will take seven members to Orlando in hopes of winning the National title for their division. Taking tumbling classes once a week and practicing their skills at home, the squad is already sharpening their moves in preparation to compete.

“We are incredibly proud of our squad,” said Candice Montague, RBCS cheerleading coach. “Their dedication and diligence can be seen in this wonderful accomplishment. As a college-preparatory program, we are committed to helping them achieve whatever they aspire to this year and beyond high school.”

Competitions like the FCC Nationals are stepping stones toward university team recruitment for seniors like Slagle and Denbow, who both aspire to cheer collegiately.  Not only is national competition an arena in which to take their talents to a higher level, it is also an opportunity for athletes to be seen by college coaches and recruiters who attend FCC Nationals looking for potential team members.

“I have been in contact with several college coaches to begin putting together highlight tapes of our senior team members,” Montague said. “National competition will be another way to help them reach their dreams of cheering in college. We want to do everything we can to help them realize their goals and prepare them for their future after high school.”
