Walton County deputies honored as hometown heroes

State Representatives Marti Coley and Brad Drake, along with Helen Rigdon from Congressman Jeff Miller’s office, honored Walton County’s finest at a ceremony recently held at the DeFuniak Springs Fire Station. Walton County deputies, along with firefighters from DeFuniak Springs Fire Department and Walton County Fire and Rescue, received awards for their acts of valor and courage in saving the lives of a family trapped in a house fire that occurred on Sept. 14, 2012.

Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputies were the first to arrive on scene, with firefighters arriving shortly thereafter. The various agencies represented worked together to save a pregnant mother and her three children from the flames engulfing their home.

Those honored from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office were Sgt. James Pitman, Deputy Darryl Goddin, Deputy Brandon Newsome, Deputy Dustin Cosson, and Deputy Thomas Thillet.
