CHELCO has selected four area high school students to participate in Youth Tour to our nation’s capital.

Selected for the June trip to Washington, D.C, were Allison Fondling, Collegiate High School; Nicholas Wilkinson, Walton High School; Mary Kathryn Myrick, Freeport High School; and Ian Kampert, Rocky Bayou Christian School.  Alternates selected by judges were Lucas Thompson, South Walton High School, and Jordan Pearson, Niceville High School.

The first part of the Youth Tour experience involved a two-day trip to Tallahassee for 23 students from across CHELCO’s service territory. The students were selected by their schools. They attended and participated in a mock trial and Senate hearing.

After the Tallahassee trip, the same students participated in a local competition where judges interviewed them for 10 minutes each. The judges selected four top-scoring students, as well as two alternates, to participate in the Youth Tour, a program organized by the National Rural Electric Cooperatives Association.

Once in Washington, D.C., students will join about 1,500 other Youth Tour representatives from across the country and spend a week learning about government, history and the role of cooperatives.
