Grand opening

The Walton County Republican Executive Committee will hold a grand opening and ribbon cutting for their new Victory Office at 2 p.m. at 3906 U.S. 98 in Emerald Coast Plaza in Santa Rosa Beach. There will also be a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the informational office, 18 South 9th Street in DeFuniak Springs. Hours of operation will vary. Florida Trail Association

Take a three-mile hike on the Jackson Trail to Peaden bridge at 8 a.m. followed by a swim in the river. Lunch after at the Gator Café in Baker. Call 776-5147.

Wednesday Night Concerts

Enjoy a free concert from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Plaza on main stage at The Village of Baytowne Wharf at Sandestin.

 

WAM classes

Shelter House will offer WAM! (Women and Money!) Economic Empowerment classes from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 1-Oct. 6, at JobsPlus, 171 North 9th St. in DeFuniak Springs. Participants will learn about credit, how to deal with creditors, loans, basic savings and checking accounts, and more. All classes are free. Art in Public Places

The Walton County Tourist Development Council and Friends of Coastal Branch Library present Suzanne Story as the exhibitor for the September 2010 Art in Public Places at the Library.

South Walton CCA banquet

Choctawhatchee Audubon Society

Dr. Allison Beauregard, chair of the Mattie Kelly Environmental Institute at Northwest Florida State College, will report on the occurrence of harmful algal blooms in Florida and on red tide related research in Choctawhatchee Bay at 6:30 p.m. at the Northwest Florida College Learning Resource Center, Room 128.

 

Friday, Sept. 3

 

Trunk show

Newbill Collection By The Sea will host jewelry designer and practicing architect Elizabeth Baird from 5 to 8 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. Sept. 4 at the gallery in Ruskin Place Artist Colony. Call 231-4500.

 

Labor Day Cookout

A Freeport Fire fundraiser will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 3 and 4 at Food Depot in Freeport. Purchase pulled pork sandwiches, hamburgers and hotdogs. Call 835-2192.

 

Sandestin Labor Day and the Baytowne Art Expo.

Enjoy the Art Expo with music from 5 to 10 p.m. Sept. 3-5 at the Village of Baytowne Wharf.

 

Seaside Labor Day

The following events will be held Labor Day weekend.

•Central Square Cinema at 8 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Amphitheater for a movie under the stars. Bring a blanket for the Disney film.

•Seaside Farmers Market from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 4 at the Amphitheater. Get fresh produce, baked goods, dairy products and other unique offerings.

•Michael Warren concert at 6 p.m. Sept. 4.

•Roman Street jazz group at 6 p.m. Sept. 5.

Alys Sound

In celebration of Labor Day weekend, Alys Beach, in conjunction with Escape to Create, will host ‘Alys Sound’ from 4 to 6 p.m. along the pedestrian path. In addition, live jazz will be performed by Sean Dietrich from 5 to 8 p.m. at Caliza, with artwork by Steve Penley at Caliza Pool.

 

Topsail tour

Learn about native frogs and toads at 7:30 p.m. at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park in Santa Rosa Beach. A $6 park entrance fee is required. Call 267-8330.

 

Kids Rock The Block

Bring the family for a rockin' night of fun from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the Western Green in Rosemary Beach. Moonwalks, face painting, airbrush tattoos, arts and crafts with Gigi's, hula hoops, bubble machine and more are featured at the free event sponsored by the Merchants of Rosemary Beach.

 

Armed Forces Appreciation Day

A day of celebration in tribute to the armed forces and our diverse community will be held from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Northwest Florida Fairgrounds. All events will be open to the public, and complimentary admission will be offered to all active and retired military and their dependents (must present military ID for complimentary admission).  Tickets for the general public will be $5/person in advance, and $10 at the venue. Children under 18 are free. The day will include vendor booths, arts and crafts, food, beverage and children’s activities, along with entertainment including Taylor Hicks, Kimberley Locke and The Tribute Beatles Show included with admission. Several surviving members of the Army parachute regiment E-Company, profiled in the bestselling book and HBO mini-series “Band of Brothers,” will be in town. Groovin’ On The Green

The Carillon Beach Institute presents a free concert with Emerald County Line from 7 to 9 p.m. on the Village Green in Carillon Beach. Bring chairs or blankets, a cooler and snacks. Call 234-7819.
