Some may wonder what snowbirds do. What don’t snowbirds do is an easier answer.

Obviously they leave their northern homes to spend the winter months in a milder climate. They come to the Emerald Coast for fellowship, relaxation, unique challenges, to make friends and experience new adventures. Interests vary just like offerings on a dinner buffet. Snowbirds can choose activities just like someone would select food on a buffet. Not every item is going to appeal to everyone; however, the cost remains the same regardless of what you pick. Now, what snowbird doesn’t enjoy an “all you can eat buffet?" At registrations that is exactly what is offered: a buffet of activities that you can sign up for.

To become a Walton County Snowbird all you need to do is come by Faith Assembly Fellowship Hall on South Geronimo in Miramar Beach during any of the following dates — Mondays, Jan. 9, 16, 23 and Feb. 6 from 8:30- 10:30 a.m. There will be a “bonus” registration this year on Thursday, Feb. 2, from 8:30-10 a.m. for Feb. 1 arriving snowbirds.

Activity leaders are fully prepared to begin the season. Some activities began last week, but it’s never too late to join in whenever you arrive. Sarah Vaillancourt leads the senior aerobics on Mondays and Wednesdays, so if you overindulged during the holidays here is an opportunity to get back in shape. In the event you sat around and stiffened up over the Christmas break, Vivica Kiger can show you how to stretch your muscles in her Pilates class. Dinah Keefe, a certified Zumba instructor, will get you moving to music in her Zumba class. Or if "grooving" to music is more your style, Len and Jan Hoover along with Dave and Gail Tudman will show you how to ballroom dance, while Julie Flynn can instruct you on the latest line dancing moves.

Should you prefer to get your exercise by hitting a ball, there is golf, tennis, basketball and pickleball. Or you can just roll the ball at Hurricane Lanes by joining the bowling league led by Mike and Joan Dougall and Don McIntosh on Fridays. Lots of choices, or avoid choosing by joining them all. Be sure to check the website at www.waltoncountysnowbirds.com to see a complete list of Activities.

The next general membership meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, at the Destin United Methodist Church Life Center, 200 Beach Drive. Please park in the east lot. The entertainment will be Eclipse, a duo featuring Amanda Holmes and Don Kupski. Amanda and Don began performing rock, country, pop and songs from Broadway musicals in February 2014. Vendors will offer discounts and promotions prior to the start of the meeting. Area merchants have generously donated door prizes, but you can’t win if you aren’t there.
