Soundsational, or perhaps we should say “It is just SUNsational,” here on the Emerald Coast. Either way, things are great and looking even better for the rest of the snowbird season in Destin. The Soundsations Show Choir from Northwest Florida State College performed for the Destin Snowbird Club on Tuesday, showing them a preview of what is to come during their annual concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center on campus.
The benefit concert is held annually and sponsored by the Destin Snowbird Club in order to raise funds for the music department at the college. The talented group of students sang and danced their way across the stage at both meetings of the membership at The Roost, much to the delight of the snowbirds. Want to see more? Tickets are available at the door beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday, so please join the students for an afternoon of music and dancing that will keep you entertained. Tickets are $10 each.
Activities continue to entice and entertain the resident snowbirds and the wonderful weather we have been experiencing has enhanced all of the many things that have been keeping everyone busy. Monday, the annual Fashion Show will be held at Louisiana Lagniappe Restaurant at 11 a.m. Snowbird models will walk the runway in clothes provided by Chico’s and a luncheon will be served. This event has been sold out, but plan on attending next year or better yet, how about modeling? Check the website and the activity sheet next season to contact those in charge and to let them know of your willingness to volunteer or help in some way.
The Computer Club has been meeting at Faith Assembly Church in Miramar Beach every second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Snowbirds wishing to learn more about computers at all levels have been instructed in Windows 10, the iPad, and future technological changes. There is a minimal charge of $10 for the whole season, so consider this as one of your activities.
The last registration of the season was held Tuesday and additional members brought the grand total for the season to 2,044 members in the Destin Snowbird Club. Of the 2,044, 20 are Life Members, 1,667 are from the USA, 373 are from Canada and four are from England and Sweden. Five hundred fifty-seven people are new members this year. Linda Zukonik, registration chairperson, would like to thank all of the people who assisted with registration this year and who made it happen “with ease." Early morning registrations show dedication on the part of the registration crew who faithfully meet and greet members as they check in. Thank you all.
The Writers Group, led by Pat Hager, has met weekly on Fridays at the Destin Library. Sharing written projects provides group members with an opportunity to write creatively and have the work critiqued in the group.
Snowbirds had a “pink and red” good time Sunday evening at the Elks Club on Okaloosa Island for the Valentine Dance. A buffet dinner was served and dancers had the opportunity to dance with their valentine to the music of Bobby D.
The Singles Friendship Club will meet at the Black Pearl following next Tuesday’s 11 a.m. meeting. Come join the group and make some new friends. It is never too late.
Don’t forget to reserve your space in the storage locker by purchasing tickets next week, Feb. 21, between meetings. Each box to be stored needs a ticket and let Ken or Gordon know if you plan to store other items such as golf clubs, bicycles, chairs, etc.
Next week will be the final TGIT Party of the season. Tickets are $5 at the door of the Seascape Conference Center and refreshments and dancing happen between 3 and 6 p.m. Crystal Gage will be the entertainment and she will also entertain the membership at both meetings at 8:30 and 11 a.m. at The Roost. Come join us for one last round of TGIT fun this season.
We continue to hear, “Isn’t this weather sensational?” Yes, it is ... Soundsational and SUNsational. Afraid you are going to miss something in the time you have left here on the Emerald Coast? Check out The Destin Log, the Northwest Florida Daily News and, of course, our “SUNsational” website at www.destinsnowbirds.org for the latest updates.
