Fatal accident occurred near the U.S. 98 and Marie Drive intersection at 12:20 a.m. Tuesday.

The Florida Highway Patrol has reported that a Walton County man was killed in the early morning hours Tuesday following a two-car crash on U.S. Highway 98.

According to a FHP press release, Brennen L. Johns, 21, of Rosemary Beach, was traveling east on U.S. Highway 98 near the Marie Drive intersection at the time of the 12:20 a.m. fatal crash.

The crash occurred when Johns collided his 2014 Honda Civic into the rear end of a 2004 Dodge Durango SUV driven by Jerry Peace II, 33, of Panama City Beach.

The FHP report stated that Johns approached Peace's vehicle at a higher rate of speed, initiated a lane change from the outside lane toward the inside lane, and the right front of the Honda Civic struck the left rear of the SUV. The force of impact caused the Civic to slide and rotate, and then overturn in the grass median of U.S. 98.

The SUV also went into a spin following impact, colliding with a guard rail along the eastbound side of the roadway.

Johns was pronounced dead at the scene, while a passenger in the Civic, 52-year-old Gregory Johns of Panama City, was treated for minor injuries at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast.

FHP noted no one in the Civic was wearing a seat belt and that results from an alcohol test are pending.

Peace, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.

Charges in the accident are pending, according to FHP.
