Each year Destiny Worship Center blesses children and families in our region with a backpack, school supplies, a new pair of shoes and a haircut to start the school year.
Pastor Steve Vaggalis always had a desire to help children in the community, so the Backpack 2 School program started in 2002.
”He says that when he was growing up his dad would always make sure he had new school supplies, a new pair of shoes and a fresh haircut,” Stacey Reed, outreach director at DWC, told The Log. “It was always such a good feeling to be able to start school this way. It became his desire to make sure other children had this same opportunity.”
Supplies, backpacks, shoes and other items are purchased all year long, and the church partners with a number of salons in the community for the haircuts. They are paid an agreed upon flat price per haircut for students who register to receive one. The outreach this year will give backpacks to 1,300 students.
Donations are being accepted through Aug. 5. An average backpack with supplies and shoes costs $50. Anyone in the community can sponsor a student.
