DEFUNIAK SPRINGS – A man who took a sledge hammer to his house and called his wife names was charged with battery after he also hit her.

Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the home July 8. They learned that the suspect, who is 50, had been drinking all day and that while his wife was making dinner for him, he refused to talk about a Father’s Day incident that hadn’t been resolved.

He then got a sledge hammer and began to destroy their belongings, according to his WCSO arrest report.

After he broke the handle of his sledge hammer, his wife ran out of the house. A witness told deputies he threw the broken handle at her but missed.

He then got a shovel, which he used to pound on the front door of the residence.
