SANTA ROSA BEACH — A motorist struck and killed two young bears Tuesday morning, leaving them dead by the side of the road.

The bears, which weighed about 25 pounds and 40 pounds, were struck on U.S. Highway 98 near its intersection with Thompson Road.

The Walton County Sheriff's Office called Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which sent someone to get the bears.

"We do track all bear road kill incidents," said Bekah Nelson, spokeswoman for the FWC.

The accident was called in at about 5 a.m.
