SANTA ROSA BEACH — A 24-year-old man was arrested on drunk driving charges despite telling authorities he “only had a few” beers.

According to his arrest report from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, on Nov. 25 at around 2 a.m. a deputy observed a black Mustang swerving back and forth and crossing the center line while driving on U.S. Highway 98. The deputy then observed the car “make a wide right turn onto County Highway 393 South into the wrong lane.”

The deputy performed a traffic stop on the car, which came to a stop slowly. When he approached the vehicle he noticed a beer bottle in the center console. The driver told the deputy he had “only had a few beers” to drink that night, and then later said he had “only, like, three.” He also said he did not have a driver’s license, but tried to present his passport to the deputy.

The man performed poorly on his field sobriety test. He was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and driving without a license, both misdemeanors.
