DEFUNIAK SPRINGS — A 7-year-old child brought an unloaded gun onto a school bus Friday.

The gun, an older revolver, was discovered when the bus was taking the Maude Saunders Elementary School student home from school, according to information provided by the Walton County Sheriff's Office.

The child had the gun at school during the day but never took it of his bag or threatened anyone with it, according to WCSO spokeswoman Corey Dobridnia.

The gun was a .32 caliber single action Smith & Wesson revolver with no ammunition.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office has no reason to believe the student had malicious intent when bringing the weapon to school.

This incident is still under investigation and the family was contacted. Any punishment will be handled by the Walton County School District.

“At no time during this investigation did we believe there was a threat to the school or that an arrest was necessary,” said said Sheriff Mike Adkinson.

Walton County School District Superintendent was not immediately available for comment.

An investigation is still open in this case.
