Meet Our Snowbirds

This year we are featuring some of the interesting and diverse people who are members of Walton County Snowbirds. To meet more come join us!

Sally and Gene Kopecky love trying new things, and have found the Walton County Snowbirds offer plenty of opportunities. The couple (who are from Cedar Rapids Iowa and have been married 52 years) first came to Miramar Beach about ten years ago and joined the group immediately. They had been attending church services and ran into neighbors who told them about the Snowbirds and urged them to join. They loved it from the start.

“I wrote in the writers group for years when Tom Maher was in charge of it,” said Sally. “ We worked on short stories — he was an excellent teacher. I took some water color classes but my passion for writing and reading gobbled up my time. I joined the book club and found it fascinating to sit in a room with so many people from all over and discuss the same books. The most fun I’ve had is in the discussion group. I love the rules where everyone gets to talk and no one interrupts. The topics are challenging and fascinating.”

Gene plays in the poker group and has learned new types of poker games from Canadians in the group which he then teaches their grandchildren at home. They love "Papa" teaching them when he returns to Iowa. He also plays in the basketball group and has tried Mah Jong. Together the couple have tried some of the dancing classes.

“We also enjoy the general meetings and winning prizes and seeing marvelous entertainment,” Sally added.

When not too busy with Snowbird activities, Sally and Gene love walking on the beaches and shopping at area stores.

“We love everything on 30A,” Sally said. “I wear 30A things proudly. I found out on a cruise ship there is a select group in England called 30 A. I was approached to see if I was a member when I was wearing my 30A jacket and cap!”
