FREEPORT — A man was arrested on battery charges after an argument with his girlfriend turned physical because he was mad she was listening to music by a black singer.

According to a Walton County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, on Jan. 13 deputies responded to the couple’s Freeport home in reference to a domestic disturbance. Once there, the 37-year-old man told deputies his girlfriend shut a door on his hand and threw a TV remote at him, but there were no injuries or damages to the home consistent with his statements.

The girlfriend, however, told authorities she and her boyfriend were watching the NFL playoffs and listening to music. She selected a song that had a black person singing, and he got mad at her, took her cell phone away and “went crazy because she was listening to a black person.” She told him she wouldn’t allow him to “make her kids racist,” which is when he got into her 14-month-old baby’s face and started yelling racial slurs at the baby and at her.

The woman told him to leave, and he grabbed her car keys and left. But then he came back and continued arguing with her, picking her up by her arms and throwing her onto the couch. She yelled out for her mom and called the police.

Red marks on the woman’s arms appeared consistent with her story.

The man was placed under arrest and charged with misdemeanor battery.
