A little late but important news features Chris Tredway, the Davidson Middle School band director.
In January, the Florida Bandmaster Association selected Tredway to be the Conductor/Clinician of the 2018 Florida All-State Middle School Band, chosen among directors throughout the United States.
He has served Okaloosa musicians for 15 years, particularly the Davidson band program since 2008.
Governor Rick Scott recognized Paxton School for achieving top 10 percent among Florida schools for improvement in mathematics achievement from 2015-16 to 2016-17.
The school’s Future Farmers of America club competed in January, with Colton Phillips placing first as an extemporaneous speaker and Haley Pickron placing first in the Prepared Public Speaking category.
The middle school club members placed second in the opening and closing ceremonies.
Nate Moore serves as coordinator for the school’s FFA.
Niceville High School came out strong for this year’s Okaloosa Schools/Cox Communications Academic Tournament, with its win over Collegiate High School, 230-115.
NHS Coach Justin Reichard fielded Capt. William Rood, Liam Ordner, Joshua Mills, Ryan Erickson and Ella Joslin.
Collegiate Capt. Gabe Seabrook led Eric Fowler, Collin McGovern, Jackson Freeman and Peyton Simms under Coach De Cook.
The match between Crestview High School and Laurel Hill School had been postponed due to excessive illness among team members and coaches.
Matches air at 4 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays on Cox Channel 6.
The Walton School District has scheduled its final academic team tournament for 4:30 p.m. today at Walton High School. The tournament determines which students go on to compete at the state level in April.
Participating schools and coaches include: Glen Harrison, Walton High School; Casi Coulther, Seacoast Collegiate High School; Melissa Buckner, South Walton High School; Brande Manning, Paxton School; and Carla Griffith; and Terri Jones-Shelly, Freeport High School.
A professional skateboard group demonstrated the science of skating to West DeFuniak Elementary School third- and fifth-graders. The program presented distribution of force, center of mass, center of gravity and inertia.
