Shoreline Church in Destin, 140 Palmetto Street (old Nightown), will host the 2018 Fly Fishing Film Tour at 7 p.m. May 11. Doors open at 6 p.m.

This tour has been around for seven years, but normally doesn’t make it into this area. The two-hour showing features eight smaller films contributed by filmmakers from around the world and shows fishing in places like Alaska, Africa, the Caribbean, South America and even Iceland.

The original and preeminent exhibition of fly fishing cinema, The F3T is a one of a kind experience. The website says each year people of all ages gather in big cities and small towns alike to soak up films from around the world, spin a few yarns among friends and dream about casts yet unmade. In the 12th annual trip around the globe, the 2018 Fly Fishing Film Tour will make its way to theaters in more than 175 cities in eight countries.

“We are hosting at Shoreline for a number of reasons,” said Eric Partin, pastor. “We have a great venue to host something like this, and you may not be aware that saltwater fly fishing is growing in this area.”

All proceeds from this event will go to the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance, a non-profit out of Northwest Florida State College that is dedicated to sustaining the health of the bay. They will be on hand at the event with a saltwater tank with local fish in it.

“We just felt as a church that we have a God-given responsibility to steward our environment,” said Partin. “And with the rapid growth of the state of Florida, many of our watersheds are in danger from pollution, and the Choctawhatchee Bay is not exempt from this. We wanted to help bring awareness to this.”

Everyone will be eligible for raffles of fly fishing merchandise and one entry in the drawing can win an all inclusive fishing trip to Dubai — lodging, fishing, food and airfare — to be given away in August 2018 courtesy of Yellow Dog Fly Fishing Adventures. There will be giveaways from many businesses, including products such as Bote Boards, Orvis, Old Florida Outfitters, The North Face, Destin Kayak Fishing, Fair Winds Sailing Co., Half Hitch Tackle, Yeti, Costa Sunglasses and Simms.

Tickets are $15 in advance at Orvis in Grand Boulevard, Bote Boards and Ships Chandler in Destin and online at www.flyfilmtour.com. Tickets will $20 at the door. Ticket price includes a complimentary beer from The Brig Brewery and hors d'oeuvres by the Flying Pig Cafe.
