BLUE MOUNTAIN BEACH — A man was transported to the hospital after apparently suffering cardiac arrest while standing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Walton County Beach Safety Chief David Vaughn said the man, believed to be in his 50s or 60s, was standing in knee-deep water about 300 yards east of the Ed Walline Beach Access when he suffered an apparent heart attack.

Lifeguards pulled the man from the Gulf of Mexico and performed CPR until medics arrived.

Vaughan said it was not believed that the Gulf or swimming conditions contributed to the man’s medical episode.

He was transported to the hospital, but Vaughan said his condition is not known.

A man who was working at a job site nearby, but who did not want to give his name, said he was working when he saw the commotion start.

“You could see him floating in the water and everybody was screaming,” he said. “Then the lifeguards came and pulled him out.”

Vaughan said it was not known if the victim was a local or visitor.
