WALTON COUNTY — A single-vehicle crash left two dead and one in serious condition, according to a press release from Florida Highway Patrol.

Around 1:40 a.m. Sunday, a 1999 Ford Explorer was traveling west on I-10 in the area of mile marker 86 in Walton County. For reasons yet to be determined, the SUV veered right and traveled into the westbound grass shoulder. The SUV then began to rotate and slide in a northwest direction down the embankment with the rear of the vehicle leading, the release said.

The rear of the SUV collided with a large tree in the woodline. The impact resulted in a fire that consumed the entire vehicle. The front seat passenger, Robert Lane Symons of Pueblo, Colorado, was able to exit the vehicle before the fire consumed the vehicle. Symons was transported to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center with serious injuries.

The driver and rear seat passenger were pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. FHP has not yet released the names of the deceased pending next of kin notification. Identifying the vehicle occupants will be delayed since they were out-of-state residents and personal property was destroyed in the fire.
