MIRAMAR BEACH — The Sacred Heart Health System — which includes Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast — has a new chief executive officer.

Ascension Healthcare, the Catholic faith-based health care provider under which Sacred Heart Health System operates, has named Tom VanOsdol to serve as CEO of both the Sacred Heart Healthcare System and St. Vincent's Healthcare in Jacksonville, according to a news release.

VanOsdol, senior vice president at Ascension Healthcare, has already been serving as St. Vincent's Healthcare's president and CEO, after being named to the posts nearly a year ago. VanOsdol came to Jacksonville in 2015 as the St. Vincent's Healthcare's chief operating officer. Prior to his arrival in Florida, VanOsdol served for more than 26 years at Ascension’s St. Vincent Health in Indiana.

In his new role, VanOsdol will serve as CEO for all of Ascension’s care sites in Florida, comprising seven hospitals and regional physician networks operated by St. Vincent’s and Sacred Heart. His promotion to CEO of the Sacred Heart Health System is part of a restructuring within Ascension. The restructuring unites all of Ascension's care sites in Florida as Ascension Florida.

“I’m blessed by the opportunity to lead a great health care ministry that has served Northwest Florida for more than 100 years," VanOsdol said in the news release. "I look forward to the privilege of serving with the Sacred Heart team to provide compassionate, personalized care to individuals along the Gulf Coast.”

VanOsdol earned master’s degrees in speech-language pathology from Ball State University and in business management from Indiana Wesleyan University. VanOsdol also earned his LEAN Six-Sigma certification from Purdue University and a two-year graduate certificate in theology and formation for Catholic health care ministry leadership from the Aquinas Institute in St. Louis. He is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Sacred Heart’s regional services include the 566-bed Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, the Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart, Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast, a 76-bed hospital near Destin, and Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf, a 19-bed hospital in Port St. Joe. Other services are provided by Sacred Heart Medical Group, the region’s largest network of physicians with offices in seven counties from Pensacola to Apalachicola.

Ascension is the largest nonprofit health system in the United States.
