CHOCTAW BEACH — Two brothers from Gulfport, Mississippi, have been arrested after they allegedly scammed an 81-year-old woman out of her money and stole her heirloom jewelry.
Tracey Brewer, 54, and David Brewer, 47, asked the woman June 25 if they could do her yard work at her home in Choctaw Beach for payment, according to a press release from the Walton County Sheriff's Office. The victim said she needed some limbs in her yard trimmed and offered to pay the Brewers.
The woman told investigators she noticed that Tracey Brewer took a long time to bring the limbs to the road while David Brewer continued to trim behind the home, the press release said. It wasn't until later that the woman noticed that several pieces of jewelry had been taken from inside the home and immediately called the Sheriff's Office.
The following day, investigators found two men riding bicycles on State Road 83 near DeFuniak Springs who matched the descriptions the victim provided. The Brewers admitted they had done yard work for the woman the day before, according to the release.
Tracey Brewer, who had outstanding warrants in Mississippi for dealing in stolen property, was found in possession of several rings that were identified by the victim. David Brewer admitted to knowing his brother had stolen the items.
Both men were charged with burglary and grand theft from a person 65 or older.
