WALTON COUNTY — Two people were taken to a local hospital with injuries following a single vehicle crash Saturday night.

According to a press release from Florida Highway Patrol, 84-year-old Orlando Mier of Miami was traveling west on U.S. Interstate 10 on the outside lane, approaching mile marker 83 around 10:35 p.m. Saturday, when the passenger stated that an unknown animal crossed the roadway in front of the vehicle from the north shoulder of the roadway.

Mier swerved the 2007 Honda Accord to the right to avoid the animal and over-corrected left. The vehicle slid and struck the center median guardrail, the release said.

Mier was taken to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center and is listed in critical condition. His passenger, 82-year-old Carrie Mier, was also taken to FWBMC and is listed in serious condition.

Mier was not charged, according to the release.
