PONCE DE LEON — Authorities are investigating a drowning at Vortex Springs that happened Wednesday afternoon.

According to a press release from the Holmes County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the popular swimming hole about 1:30 p.m. after receiving a report of the drowning.

The Sheriff's Office identified Terril Crossfield, 21, a man who was from Jamaica but living in Pensacola, as the victim.

Witnesses said Crossfield had helped another swimmer after noticing she was struggling, and that after passing the swimmer to another bystander for help getting to the shore, Crossfield also became distressed and went underwater, the release said.

A diver pulled Crossfield from the water, and CPR was under way when emergency responders arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
